Our Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) services increase each of your offices’ exposure to potential customers who turn to the internet in search of your products and/or services.

The Local SEO Opportunity:

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing strive to provide people with the most relevant results possible. When people search the web for something that is provided by businesses in their local market, those local businesses are the most relevant results that can be displayed. For this reason, search engines increasingly give preference in their search results to local businesses when they believe the searcher is looking for a locally-available product or service. We refer to these types of searches as those with “local intent”.

The search engines determine local intent in two ways: 1) if the searcher specifically mentions an area in their search phrase (e.g. House Cleaners in Chicago), and 2) When the type of product or service being searched is usually provided locally, but the searcher does not mention any particular geography. In this case, the search engine detects the IP address of the searcher’s computer to determine where he or she is likely to be located, and displays results specific to that area.

This is good news for businesses that provide products and/or services to customers in their local market, because it gives them a distinct advantage over any companies that are located elsewhere.

Businesses that do a good job of understanding how their customers search the internet, aligning their internet presence with those customers, and appearing more relevant to search engines than their competitors cash in on the Local SEO opportunity.

Local SEO Challenges:

Search Engines Constantly Change: Search engines don’t know which businesses are the best. In fact, let’s not give them too much credit – they’re just computers that gather what data they can about companies on the internet and perform mathematical calculations to pick winners. SEO is just the practice of understanding what data is important to search engines and making sure you have it. The problem is that the equation is constantly changing. For example, Google changes which factors it cares about 400-500 times per year! It’s just not realistic for most businesses to try to keep up with all the change.

The Internet Doesn’t Forget Easily, and Innocent Mistakes Cost You Dearly: Among the factors that search engines are looking for in a business, there are some that matter a lot, and there are others that don’t matter as much. Being proactive about internet marketing is a lot like rolling a boulder down a hill. Once you’ve picked a direction and give it some momentum, it’s difficult to change course or start over. It’s critical that things be done right from the beginning, and seemingly small mistakes in particular areas have huge long-term consequences.

Your Competitors Don’t Sleep: Because there is so much to be gained by having the most exposure online, everyone who is below you is constantly trying to pass you up. In addition to trying to keep up with the constant change of search engines, you have to keep racing ahead, or your highly-motivated customers are likely to leave you in the dust.

The Tracking Limitations Inherent to Local SEO

February 28, 2014 By James Munnerlyn

Local SEO (search engine optimization) professionals have long wished for more effective ways to measure the effects of their efforts.  Most notably, unlike some other forms of SEM (search engine marketing) and offline mediums, we cannot use tracking telephone numbers or URLs.
